Instrumental Music
Gumeracha PS hosts the Torrens Valley
Music Hub where year 5 to 7 students from neighbouring schools travel to our
school every week to participate in a Hub Band Program. The Program offers both
small group instrumental, and band tuition. The instruments offered are Flute,
Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Electric Bass and Percussion. Tuition is
provided by the DECS Instrumental Music Service, and students in year's 5 to 7
can access the program once they have attended a "Come & Try Day".
"Come & Try Days" are held in Term 3,
and give students the opportunity to try all the
musical instruments listed above. This enables
students to make an informed decision about which instrument they would like to
learn, and also give Instrumental Teachers an opportunity to suggest instrument
suitability. Once students have tried all the above instruments, they
are asked to list three instrument preferences. To ensure a successful Hub Band
Program, it is vital that there is a balance of instruments, so some students
will be offered their 2n
d or 3rd preference.
Here at Gumeracha PS we believe this Hub Program offers our students a terrific musical opportunity that can progress into their secondary schooling. It is also another aspect of the performing arts, an area we have tried to develop in our school. There are many educational benefits from learning a musical instrument. Music assists in the development of literacy and numeracy skills, improves concentration and memory, develops self confidence and social skills and most importantly, its fun!
There are currently 60 students participating in the Torrens Valley Music Hub. Instrumental lessons are held weekly, with band lessons scheduled for weeks 3, 6 & 9. Lessons are free but students have to fund their own musical instrument hire. Students who are currently learning an instrument from a private provider can not access instrumental lessons, but are most welcome to participate in band sessions.
